PLYMOUTH Albion lock Colin Stewart has confirmed he is leaving Brickfields for a new challenge across the Channel.
Stewart,
who has spent three seasons with Albion having joined them in the
summer of 2006 from Border Reivers, has agreed a two-year deal with
French Second Division side Tarbes Pyrenees Rugby.
The former Scottish under-21 international has been a senior member of Albion's squad since he moved to Plymouth.
Last
term, Stewart, who missed two months of the season after having a
cartilage operation, made 15 National Division One appearances,
including 13 starts.
Stewart is the latest player to confirm he is leaving Albion.
He follows in the footsteps of prop Jané du Toit, winger Justin Mensah-Coker and fellow lock Arthur Brenton.
"I
have signed a two-year deal with Tarbes," confirmed Stewart, who will
join former Torquay professional footballer and ex-Cornish Pirates and
Devon winger Martin Worthington at the French club.
"I have emailed Martin who has just played his first season for Tarbes and he had nothing but good things to say about the club.
"The opportunity of playing rugby in France is appealing to me and will provide me with an exciting new challenge.
"I
have been at Plymouth for three years and although I have enjoyed my
time with my club, the offer from Tarbes was too good to turn down.
"My
main focus in recent weeks has been on keeping Plymouth in the second
tier of English rugby and making sure they will be taking part in the
Championship next season.
"I am glad I helped them achieve that in what was my final season with the club, but I am now looking forward to my move.
"It will certainly be a different culture for my family and I to get used to, but I am relishing the challenge."
Stewart
added: "I did have an initial chat with (Plymouth's chairman of rugby)
Graham Dawe two or three months ago about staying with Albion next
season.
"But because of the team's lowly position
in the league and the fact they didn't know whether or not they would
remain in the division, they were not in a position to offer me a
contract.
"Then, Tarbes came along with their offer, and I just couldn't say no.
"It does play a part in your decision making that Tarbes can offer you a two-year deal when Albion can only offer you one-year.
"Especially when you look at the way things are at the moment and when you have children to think of.
"My wife is expecting our second child in the summer, so to get offered a two-year deal is fantastic.
"Moving to France to play for Tarbes is a chance for me to try and push myself on somewhere else."
Although
he is relishing the opportunity of playing his club rugby in a
different country, Stewart admits the decision to depart Albion was a
tough one.
"Leaving Plymouth wasn't an easy decision because I have had three great years with the club," said Stewart.
"I will leave Albion with great memories – my wife and I love the South West and we will still keep our house here.
"I have nothing but fond memories of my time with Plymouth.
"I had a great time and I made a lot of good friends."
Stewart
added: "I would just like to thank everyone connected with Plymouth
Albion – the players, the staff and the supporters – for being so
helpful, so friendly and so supportive during my time with the club.
"I am leaving the club on a good note and, who knows, maybe in the future, I may return."
Albion have so far refused to confirm which players have re-signed for them next season.
The
Herald has learned that highly-rated fly-half Kieran Hallett and
Canadian international back-row forward Sean-Michael Stephen have
definitely penned new deals for 2009-10.
